Erik ten Hag’s men took on Unai Emery’s Aston Villa this afternoon at Villa Park. United have an excellent record against the Villans having come away victorious in over 100 meetings. The reds headed into the match on a nine game unbeaten run following the win over Real Sociedad in San Sebastian during the week which saw them narrowly miss out on advancing as group E winners by just one goal.
Man United’s line up saw David De Gea in Goal with Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martínez, Victor Lindelof and Diogo Dalot across the back four. Christian Eriksen and Casemiro were deployed in central midfield with Donny Van De Beek playing ahead in the number 10 role. Alejandro Garnacho started on the left wing, Marcus Rashford on the right wing and Cristiano Ronaldo up front.
Man United’s substitutions were all made in the 65th minute with Shaw being replaced Tyrell Malacia, Anthony Elanga replacing Garnacho and Anthony Martial coming on for Van De Beek to take over the number 10 role.
Disaster struck for ten Haag’s men in the 7th Minute of the first half when a Jacob Ramsey pass found the path of Leon Bailey who drove passed Martinez and slotted the ball passed De Gea. This was followed up by a stunning Lucas Digne free kick in the 11th minute placed just out of reach of De Gea to leave Man United 2-0 down.
All hope was not lost when just before half time a Luke Shaw cross deflected off Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey to find the back of the Villa net to bring the score to 2-1 at the close of the first half. Unfortunately this was as good as it gets for the reds on the day as in the 49th minute, an Ollie Watkins pass found Jacob Ramsey who scored the final goal of the day, this time in the Man United’s net. The match finished 3-1 to Aston Villa.
