Edison Cavani is reported to leave Manchester United this summer ending 14 year European career

According to Ole, not the manager, but an Argentinian news outlet, the news outlet is reporting that Edison Cavani has decided to join Argentine powerhouse Boca Juniors this summer.

Edison Cavani has a one year contract with Manchester United and it was reported in February that the clubs were negotiating a possible extension for one more season.

The Uruguayan has had his eye on the legendary South American club for some time, dreaming of playing for Boca Juniors since a child.

Manchester United do have an option to trigger an extension for one more season, but this could be decent news for United from a business standpoint.

United pay Cavani a whooping €200,000 a week salary. Extremely steep for an older, often injured and back up striker. United could use someone like Cavani, a bigger, experienced and clinical striker to replace him.

Given the current financial situations of all clubs, letting Cavani walk this summer might not be a bad situation, it could be a positive.

The next couple months could be pivotal for Anthony Martial’s Manchester United future

At 25-years-old, Anthony Martial could be considered prime Martial, last season’s stats and his current age reflect that. He is not getting any younger, but Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to back his forward.

“He knows he will have to make it happen himself and we encourage him and coach him and we know that he’s got this quality and class.”

In 43 games in all competitions, Martial scored 22 goals last season. In the league he had 17 goals and 6 assists. One could speculate that summer reinforcements at forward were not brought in because of Martial’s form and not only monetary restraints due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

This season his form has dipped, Martial only has 4 goals and 3 assists in the league this season and the odd goal here and there in cup competitions. It is safe to say that statistically Martial is not performing at a level he is capable of.

“Everyone goes through a difficult patch at times and Anthony is working hard, that’s the main thing,” said Solskjaer about his French forward.

While watching Martial play one could see a lack of effort. A lack of effort that was blasted by many United fans and pundits.

In a game against Newcastle a couple of weeks ago, Martial was lambasted for his lack of efforts and mics picked up Solskjaer constantly “encouraging” him to get forward.

One specific incident that game, Daniel James was running with the ball down the right side and Martial was jogging getting into the box to provide the support for James down the wing.

On January, 31, 2010, in a game against Arsenal, Wayne Rooney had a stunning run were he started sprinting inside of his own half to get on the end of a ball after a stunning counter attack.

Rooney epitomized hard work when he put on the United uniform, the determination to get a goal in an important match against Arsenal on full display.

That type of determination has been missing from Martial this season. A season where United currently sit 2nd in the Premier League. Martial’s success is instrumental in the overall success for United and if he bagged four or five more goals this season United could be closer in the title race.

Martial is the big money forward on the team despite him signing almost six years ago. If United were to somehow get back in the title race, now being down 12 points after the weekend Martial needs to step up.

If he does not, realistically United might look to sell the Frenchman as they look to challenge for the title next season.

Manchester United and Liverpool To Have Summer Transfer War Over These Three Players

The two Premier League sides continue to be linked with the same players recently. Ben White, Nikola Milenkovic and now Raphinha will likely be the subjects of a transfer war between the two rivals.

The rivalry spilling over to transfer market does not come as much of a surprise, both clubs have dealt with injuries or need to strengthen similar positions. The players listed also do not come with as steep of an asking price, compared to other players linked with the clubs. A bidding war could force the clubs to over pay for one of the players.

Raphinha

It was reported by Sportitalia Journalist Gianluigi Longari that Raphinha could be targeted by both clubs, like all the players listed, multiple teams will be inquiring about the prospect of acquiring them.

Raphinha has five goals and assists in seventeen games this season. Leeds are 5th in the league in scoring this season and Raphinha has transitioned well from Rennes and statistically has surpassed what he did in his best Ligue 1 campaign.

Raphinha plays primarily at right wing but could play on the left as well. Leeds bought the Brazilian for €20 million but could double their money in one year. €40 million could be seen as pricey but it is almost €60 million less than what Borussia Dortmund is commanding for Jadon Sancho. Jack Grealish is also a pricier option and does not seem interested in leaving Aston Villa despite constant speculation of him doing so.

The right wing/midfield position is a position that could use competition after Edison Cavani became the number 9 when fit, the hybrid forwards like Anthony Martial, Daniel James and Mason Greenwood have had some ups and downs playing in that position with Martial and Greenwood looking better centrally.

Ben White and Nikola Milenkovic

Both defenders are linked with United and Liverpool with Milenkovic being more recently. Ben White has had speculation surrounding him since last summer and in the winter tranter window.

Liverpool is in desperate need of a center back after being obliterated at the position with injuries. All of their top center back choices are injured or were injured at some point. United on the other hand need a central defender for competition purposes some suggest another central defender could help United push for a title.

Ben White was highly targeted this summer after a stellar season in the Championship helping Leeds get promoted and win the league. White has played 24 matches this season for Brighton and plays for a defense that is on par with United in terms of goals conceded this season at 32.

If White joins the team United could feature an all English backline and even all English defense if Dean Henderson is keeper next season. It would be interesting if they all played for England in the same team. It is not likely but is possible, Luke Shaw is having one of his best seasons in his career and arguably the best left back in the league.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is one of the best one-on-one defenders in the world and with Trent Alexander-Arnold struggling this season, Wan-Bissaka could be the first choice right back during the March friendlies. Harry Maguire is the captain of both sides and Henderson was outplaying Jordan Pickford last season.

White might be best suited at United for chemistry, to be able to play with the same players all year does not happen often. The success of countries like Germany could be contributed to that. Jerome Boateng, Joshua Kimmich, Mats Hummels and Manuel Neurer have played for Germany and Bayern at the same time with great success.

Nikola Milenkovic reportedly would only cost €30 million, not that bad, if United were to get all three it would be similar in price to the Sancho ransom. Fiorentina are not having a good season, they are currently sitting 14th and look way off the pace of Europe to mount a challenge and finished 10th and 16th the last two seasons.

Milenkovic has started 21 games this season for Fiorentina and is 5th in clearances and 6th in tackles for defenders in the league. Last season he added five goals, a decent return for a defender

United could be in a good situation next season if they were able to bolster their squad with any of the mentioned players creating an extremely competitive squad.

Manchester United Need to Use Their Connections to Sign This Up and Coming Irish Star

Derby County are currently going through fiscal problems and it is reported that United have already signed three unnamed youth players.

Jason Knight is only 20-years-old and has already made over 60 league appearances for the Rams. He has scored 8 goals in the last two seasons and is going to be pivotal in the Rams fight for survival in the Championship.

One of Wayne Rooney’s first orders of business was to make the Irishman a captain as a then teenager. “He’s a manager’s dream. He gives everything,” said Rooney in an interview last month.

Central midfield might not be an overwhelming position of need, but there is always the possibilities of injuries or players having their form dip. Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay are currently injured with McTominay not as injured as his French counterpart.

Fred has been amazing of late and Bruno will play as the 10 forever. Matic is getting up in age and is a solid depth piece. Maybe next season there might be a spot on the roster for a new midfielder.

Derby currently sit five points clear of the bottom of the Championship. It will be interesting to see if United will keep tabs on the Irish international. Many clubs will look at situation and try to pounce.

Manchester United Would Be Foolish to Sell This Player

It was reported that Dean Henderson approached manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over his lack of playing time. It was also reported that United have slapped a €40 million price tag on the keeper.

It is understandable that United having a willingness to sell from a business standpoint, if they were to sell him they would get full profit because they produced Henderson and if they kept him they would not have to buy a keeper in the close future.

David de Gea is 30, and he does not seem to be in as good as form as previous campaigns. United have nearly given up the same amount of goals this season as compared to the whole of last season, only four goals separate the totals.

It could be good business if United were to sell de Gea to Spain and start Henderson, you have a keeper in Henderson who is only 23-years-old. They could have their future keeper for the next decade, or risking losing him to a Premier League rival. With the news that one keeper might possibly leave this summer, rivals have been keeping tabs on Henderson.

Henderson has appeared in 12 games in all competitions this season for United and has a total of 7 clean sheets. He looks likely to continue playing cups and Europe, barring any injuries of de Gea.

David de Gea has only 9 clean sheets in all competitions and has given up a total of 37 goals in 28 games. David de Gea is a legend at the club and has stuck with the team during some rough years.

It will be a tough decision for all involved, but it could be foolish if they were to let Henderson go to a rival and stick with an aging de Gea. What should United do, go with the future or continue with the legend? Comment below.

5 Domestic Depth Buys at Center Back

Paul Scholes after the game against Newcastle stated that United need a commanding Center Back to compete for a title. United will surely bring in a top rated and pricey Centre Back, but they need depth as well.

If they do bring someone in Lindelof could be sold, even Bailly. Phil Jones has looked destined to leave for months and adds little to the team. Even Axel Tuanzebe could leave on loan, there are rumors that he might. United look likely to shake things up at the position in the summer.

In the last year some big clubs have gone to the Championship and fringe Premier League teams to buy Center Backs. Everton brought in Ben Godfrey from Norwich, Liverpool bought Ben Davies from Preston and Spurs bought Joe Rodon from Swansea.

Here is five potential depth buys that can be cheap for United:

1. Ethan Pinnock- Brentford

Despite losing a plethora of attacking options the last couple of seasons, Brentford are still in the hunt to get promoted. They lost out in the Playoff Final to Fulham last season and currently sit 2nd in the table. The London man began his playing career at Millwall and was released at 15. He signed with non-league side Dulwich Hamlet and played six seasons with the club. In 2019 he signed with Brentford and has been instrumental in the clubs resurgence. He is 27 though, but only would set United back €3 million, maybe.

2. Jarrad Branthwaite- Blackburn (Everton)

Rumors are circulating lately that United are interested in the towering Center Back from Carlisle as well as other top English clubs. Currently on loan to Blackburn from Everton he has only made 7 Championship appearances. Probably one for the future, he only runs for about €2.5 million, not a bad deal. You will likely see more news about the CB in the near future.

3. Adam Webster- Brighton

Everybody wants Ben White, every great performance by Ben White shoots up his price and rightfully so. He will command attention in the market this summer and top clubs have been circling since last summer. His teammate Adam Webster has been getting attention as well, he signed for Brighton from Bristol City in 2019 for €23 million and has made 53 league appearances for the Seagulls. If United lose out on Ben White, Adam Webster could be a useful option at €15 million.

4. John Egan and Jack O’Connell- Sheffield United

I think it is safe to say that Sheffield United are going down. They will try and do their best to hold on to a defense that was the 4th best a season before. At the heart of that defense is John Egan and Jack O’Connell, a lack of goals has rooted them at the bottom of the table as well as defenses injuries. O’Connell has been out nearly all season and Egan recently injured. They will have some chemistry with Dean Henderson who looks likelier and likelier to take the goal keeping shirt off de Gea. Something around €10 million and you can get one of the two.

5. Semi Ajayi- West Brom

Another team that looks likely to go down. Relegation teams do provide some gems, their woefulness rarely can be narrowed down to an individual player and West Brom have a couple of gems on their team. One of those gems could be Semi Ajayi, could Ajayi play for a middle level club? He just happens to play for a bad one at the moment. The Londoner has 24 premier league appearances and 2 goals this campaign. He was instrumental in helping West Brom get promoted last season and could be bought for a cheap €5 million. A nice depth piece for cup games for a big club.

Final Thoughts

None of these guys are going to slot in a Manchester United starting XI, but they are all probably better than Phil Jones. United are going to probably bring in more than one Center Back and with the current monetary climate they might have to be frugal with depth pieces.

Sancho or Fati? Neither?

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Manchester United’s interest of Jadon Sancho has cooled due to the continued emergence of Mason Greenwood.

Jadon Sancho has had a slight rise inform lately with 2 goals and 2 assists in his last three matches. But his form this season compared to last season has substantially dipped.

In the Bundesliga last season the Englishman had 17 goals and 16 assists, this season he only has 5 goals and 8 assists.

Borussia Dortmund were holding out for a reported €120 million with Manchester side bidding closer to €100 million.

Sancho still looks primed to leave Dortmund this summer, but the Red Devils could be moving on from the playmaker because of a rich academy and a stubborn Dortmund. His form as well as COVID-19 has dropped his value, with this news it is likely that other English clubs will begin circling.

Ansu Fati

Last week it was reported by Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo that United had a €130 million bid for the 18-year-old sensation rejected by Barcelona.

The bid came after United fell short on bringing Sancho in during the summer transfer window.

United could have dodged a bullet, Fati has been injured and faces a third operation on an injured knee. Fati has 4 goals in 7 La Liga matches this season.

Would you rather United had brought in Sancho or Fait? Also would you rather have United continue to prop up their own youth? Comment below!

United Target Dayot Upamecano Commits to Bayern; 7 Potential Center Back Targets.

RB Leipzig center back Dayot Upamecano has decided to commit his future to Bayern Munich. The 22-year-old Frenchmen was linked with Manchester United as well as a brevity of other top English and European clubs. Bayern Munich triggered a €42.5 million release clause and announced that Upamecano will be at the Allianz Arena for the next five years.

It is no surprise that United were linked with a top defender. United have given up 30 goals as of writing this, only Leeds in the top half of the table have given up more. Now that Dayot has signed here are 7 potential targets for United:

  1. Sergio Ramos

Vamos Sergio! United fans had to celebrate his thrashing of Liverpool in the Champions League final in 2018. The longtime Galactico’s contract runs out this summer and he is free to negotiate with teams as of January. A free signing of this caliber is likely to draw interest of all the top teams in Europe. His wages will be high as well as his age, 35! It is either him or Varane, free with high wages or high fee and high wages?

2. Kalidou Koulibaly-Napoli

Probably the only player who slots right into the starting XI on the list. Koulibaly has been
linked with a transfer away from Napoli for the past couple of windows. His hefty price tag is an obvious detractor with Nepalese side quoting upwards to €90 million for the Senegalese defender. Koulibaly would be the most likeliest of defenders to fix the defensive woes at Old Trafford.

3. Samuel Umtitti-Barcelona

The 27-year-old World Cup champion has only made six league appearances for Barcelona this campaign and had looked likely to leave the Camp Nou this summer. This could be a bargain if Barca signs someone big at his position, they have been linked Koulibaly as well. If the price is right he could provide much need competition for Maguire and Lindelof.

4. Jules Kounde- Sevilla

Easily the most exciting prospect on this list. The French invasion at center back is crazy to see. No other country it seems is pumping out top talent at the position like the French. Kounde is only 22-years-old and already has 100 league appearances in the French league and Spanish league combined. The Europa league champion has been linked with the Red Devils and would be an exciting addition, but he comes at a steep price, around €55 million. Harry Maguire cost €80 mil, so it might seem like nice business if they were to sign one of the Crown Jules of Europe.

5. Ibrahima Konate-RB Leipzig

This list is going to get a lot younger. Ibrahima Konate is only 21-years-old, the teammate of Upamecano has not featured this season in the league for Leipzig, so would they miss him? He is an obvious replacement internally for Leipzig, but they have a pipeline of talent coming from Austria. Salzburg boasts some exciting talent at center back that Leipzig is likely to capitalize on. Konate would be a long term investment for United. These next couple of months will determine the immediate need for a center back. If United figure some things out maybe high rated youth will be answer at the position.

6. Chris Richards-Bayern Munich

Americans are in fashion on the market right now. Bayern Munich will probably make room for the arrival of Upamecano, the departure of David Alaba looks certain, Boateng maybe? Both look destined to places other than Manchester. It is not likely that Bayern would let the young American leave or even United to target him, but the Amad Diallo transfer came out of nowhere. The American is currently on loan at Hoffenheim and has featured this season for both clubs. Richards can play the RCB in a 3-man backline and plays the role that Benjamin Pavard plays for Bayern. Youthfulness and versatility could be tempting for United.

7. Joachim Anderson-Fulham (Lyon)

Fulham sit 18th in the table and surprisingly have only given up one goal more than United, but they cannot score goals, so they languish in the relegation zone. The Dane has been a rock at the back and has taken the armband in the injury absence of team captain Tom Cairney. If Fulham were to get relegated United would have to deal with Anderson’s parent club Lyon.
